How to create a monero wallet

Created:

Introduction

We will explain how to install the official monero wallet.

We are going to use monero-project github to downloads the latest release. You can also download the wallet fro getmonero.org.

When you have your wallet ready you can also mine, check this monero mining guide here.

Step 1: Download and uncompress the wallet

Download the appropiate file for your OS:

  • For linux download the file starting with monero-linux
  • For windows download the file starting with monero-win-x86
  • For OSX download the file starting with monero-mac-x64

with linux and osx you can uncompress with:

tar jxvf moneto-linux-.... #or OSX filename

On windows use a gui to uncompress the file.

Step 2: Start the monerod deamon

Monero deamon will join the network and download the blockchain information. When the deamon downloaded all data up to the current day, continue to step 3.

To start the deamon execute:

./monerod

Step 3: Create a new wallet

Start the monero wallet client:

./monero-wallet-cli

If will ask you a few questions and then the following message will be shown:

PLEASE NOTE: the following 25 words can be used to recover access to your wallet. Please write them down and store them somewhere safe and secure. Please do not store them in your email or on file storage services outside of your immediate control.

Take note of the generated words, since it can be used to recover the wallet in case your harddrive is destroyed. The generated wallet is a deterministic one.

When the generation finished you will have a monero wallet shell and you can type address to view your address.
